Pour inaugurer la rubrique Livres de ce site, nous vous proposons de découvrir un ouvrage à destination des débutants souhaitant partir à la découverte visuelle du ciel profond.
Ce petit livre propose un catalogue de 130 objets (galaxies, amas, nébuleuses) accessibles avec des diamètres pas trop gros, de 60 à 250mm.

Ce qu'on trouve dans ce livre
Après une brève introduction sur l’observation du ciel profond (importance du diamètre de l’instrument, de la pureté du ciel et de l’accoutumance à la vision nocturne) le livre entre dans le vif du sujet avec les objets eux-mêmes.
Outre une sélection des Messier les plus intéressants, le catalogue est complété de divers classiques NGC qui valent aussi le détour. Le livre se concentre sur les objets visibles dans l’hémisphère nord même si quelques objets de l’hémisphère sud sont présentés.
Ceux-ci sont classés par ascension droite, ce qui se révèle être un choix judicieux puisque cela correspond à leur ordre de défilement dans le ciel. On peut donc préparer sa soirée d’observation en les prenant dans l’ordre, quitte à les regrouper aussi par constellation.
Le livre est divisé en cinq sections : deux pour les zones polaires nord et sud et trois couvrant chacune 8h d’ascension droite pour les latitudes célestes moyennes.
Chaque section s’ouvre sur une carte générale représentant les constellations et les principaux objets de la zone. Les objets sont ensuite présentés individuellement avec pour certains une photographie et une carte plus détaillée de certaines zones.
Le livre se conclut sur quelques indications bibliographiques et de ressources en ligne.
A l’épreuve du ciel
Gros point fort du livre, le choix des objets est vraiment pertinent et permet de se concentrer sur les plus spectaculaires sans se sentir perdu dans un catalogue trop fourni.
Les descriptions des objets sont très bien faites avec une indication du spectacle à espérer en fonction du diamètre de l’instrument, même si l’auteur est parfois un peu optimiste. Le choix de la présentation photographique est en ce sens discutable car il peut induire en erreur le débutant sur ce qu’on peut espérer voir à l’oculaire.
Côté points faibles, les cartes de localisation des objets sont assez indigentes et ne permettent pas un repérage utile. Il faudra donc obligatoirement compléter l’ouvrage d’un bon atlas du ciel comme le Pocket Sky Atlas que nous vous présenterons bientôt ou un logiciel type Cartes du Ciel ou C2A qui permettent d’imprimer des cartes sur mesure.
Enfin, son format broché le rend peu aisé d’emploi sur le terrain.
Pour conclure, j’ai plaisir à utiliser cet ouvrage pour préparer mes soirées d’observation. Les objets sont choisis avec soin et assurent de ne pas s’ennuyer à l’oculaire. Je vois ce guide comme un menu dans lequel on peut piocher à sa guise au coin du feu en ayant à côté de soi un atlas du ciel et un carnet de notes à emmener sur le terrain.
C’est un ouvrage que je recommande à ceux qui viennent de s’équiper d’un instrument et qui se sentent un peu perdus face à l’immensité du ciel.
